One of San Juan Del Sur’s most iconic sights is the Christ of the Mercy statue (Cristo de la Misericordia), standing tall on the northern headland and gazing out over the Pacific Ocean. Whether you’re religious or not, a visit to this landmark offers some of the best views in town—and a chance to see San Juan Del Sur from a whole new perspective.

The Christ of Mercy Statue

A Landmark with a View

The statue is perched on a hill about 134 metres above sea level. It’s one of the largest statues of Christ in Central America, measuring 24 metres from base to outstretched hand. On clear days, you can see far up and down the coastline—all the way to Costa Rica on a good day.

How to Get There

  • Walking: It’s about a 30-45 minute uphill walk from the main beach, with a steady climb and some steep sections. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water.

  • By Car or Taxi: Taxis can take you up most of the way if you prefer not to walk. There’s a small parking area near the top.

  • Entrance Fee: There’s a modest entrance fee (typically around $2) which helps maintain the site.

What to Expect

At the summit, you’ll find not just the statue, but also a small chapel and an observation deck. Sunrise and sunset are especially spectacular, with golden light spilling over the bay and boats dotting the water below. It’s a favourite spot for photos—so don’t forget your camera.

A Place for Reflection

Even if you’re not religious, the peaceful setting at the top is perfect for taking a break from the buzz of town. The statue itself is a symbol of hope and protection for locals, watching over both residents and visitors alike.

Tips for Visiting

  • Go early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat.

  • Bring some cash for the entrance fee.

  • If you’re walking, take breaks and enjoy the changing views as you climb.

Did You Know?

  • The statue was completed in 2009 and has become a symbol of San Juan Del Sur.

  • At night, it’s beautifully lit and visible from much of the town.

Whether you make the climb for fitness, faith, or just to snap some incredible photos, visiting Christ of the Mercy is a must-do during your stay in San Juan Del Sur.
